These pieces offer two perspectives on immigration in the United States. I would like for you to read the poems and view the videos - then answer the questions below that we will explore in a brief seminar in class on Friday 10/07.
1) What is the tone of Emma Lazarus' poem towards immigration in the US? What diction and/or imagery in the poem helped you to reach your conclusion?
2) What is the tone of Aldrich's poem towards the same issue? What diction and/or imagery helped you to reach your conclusion? You may need to look up some of the allusions that he uses in this poem to make sense of it.
3) How do the two videos on this site help to enhance our understanding of these poems? What viewpoints on modern day immigration do they offer?
